Burnaby Lakers Sr A traded up to select Semiahmoo’s Jacob Dunbar first overall at the 2023 Western Lacrosse Association Graduating Junior Player Draft in Langley on Tuesday (Jan. 31).

The WLA draft, held virtually, saw 35 players picked by seven teams in five rounds. Full results are posted on draft.wlalacrosse.com/live.

Semiahmoo’s Butch La Roue was taken 23rd overall, also by Burnaby Sr A Lakers.

2001-born players Dunbar and La Roue developed their lacrosse skills with Semiahmoo Minor Lacrosse Association. Both began as Tykes (U7), enjoying many seasons at Taylor Box and Centennial Arena. Each played an integral part in their team winning a silver medal at the 2017 Midget (U17) A2 Provincials. Dunbar played junior lacrosse with Port Coquitlam Saints, La Roue with Burnaby Lakers.

In the recent BC Jr A Lacrosse League U17 Entry Draft held Jan. 21, three 2006-born Semiahmoo Minor Lacrosse players were selected. William Denman was selected 23rd overall and Ayrton Bodo was selected 42nd by Delta Jr A Islanders. Levi Leach was selected 27th by New Westminster Jr A Salmonbellies. Most importantly as we transition into a new season, congratulations to all those selected in the Sr and Jr drafts. The jump from minor to major lacrosse is a meaningful and memorable one. We look forward to seeing you put on your respective jerseys for the first time!
